GRANDPARENTS AS PARENTS CONFERENCE

UK

Over 57,000 of Kentucky children live in households headed by grandparents, and more that 12,000 are living with other relatives according to the AARP Foundation. Of those combined numbers, more than 30,000 children have no parent present in the home where they live. The underlying causes include parental drug use, imprisonment and/or illness or death of the parent. The needs of children can seem overwhelming, especially if you are unexpectedly thrust into the role of being their primary caregiver.

The Bluegrass Regional Grandparents As Parents Coalition will hold its 16th annual conference on Thursday, March 15, 2018 at the Clarion Hotel, 1950 Newtown Pike, Lexington. The agenda includes nine workshops with a focus on Attachment, Trauma and Co-Regulation, Navigating the Legal Path, Shedding Light on Synthetic Drugs and Opiates, Tips and Resources for Your Child with Autism, The Care & Feeding of Grandchildren, Advocating for Kinship Children and Families, Taking Care of the Caregiver, What to do About My LGBTQ Child, and Your “Other AAA” – The Area Agency on Aging. Conference keynote speaker, Paris Goodyear-Brown, is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and a Registered Play Therapist-Supervisor with 20 years of experience in treating children and families with trauma and attachment disorders. Her newest books include A Safe Circle for Little U, Tackling Touchy Subjects, Handbook of Child Sexual Abuse, Play Therapy with Traumatized Children and the Worry Wars: An Anxiety Workbook for Kids and Their Helpful Adults.
