A VARIANT of Lyme disease that can’t be detected by standard tests may be lurking in the southeastern US, according to researchers in Georgia. Michael Felz and his colleagues at the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta tested 23 patients with the bull’s eye rash that is characteristic of the disease. Sixteen showed no signs of infection with the spirochaete Borrelia burgdorferi, which is the recognised cause of the tick-borne disease in North America (Archives of Dermatology, vol 135, p 1317). And even those who tested positive were carrying a version of the organism with a different protein make-up.
